Food Stamps

This program lets low income families buy food for a nutritionally balanced meal.

Who is eligible?

There are 7 categories that need to be met in order to be eligible for food stamps:

  1. Residence
    • You must Live in Texas and apply in the county in which you live
  2. Citizenship
    • United States citizens
    • Non-citizens who meet special criteria
  3. Employment Services
    • All unemployed persons who are 16 to 59 yrs. old and able to work need to register for employment services before applying and should remain after applying
    • Persons who meet special criteria do not need to register
  4. Work Requirement
    • Persons who are able to work must be employed at least 20hrs/week or receiving unemployment services.
    • People 18-50, not working 20/hrs. per week, only receive three months of services.
    • Persons in the following category do not need to be working 20 hrs. per week
      • Exempt from employment services requirements
      • Physically or mentally unfit
      • Member of a food stamp household
      • Pregnant
      • Lives in a ABAWD county
  5. Resources
    • Persons who already receive assistance are exempt from this category
  6. Income
    • Households must meet a gross income test. Their income cannot be more than the gross income limit.
  7. Social Security
    • Households must provide a social security card unless they meet special citizenship criteria

How to apply?

If you live in Texas and need services (Medicaid, food stamps, TANF, WIC, medicare, etc.) follow these instructions to apply:

  1. Print these two forms and fill them out
  2. Contact your Texas Department of Human Services office
  3. Make an appointment
  4. Take a picture I.D., your Social Security Card, and proof of pregnancy (if applicable), and filled out forms
