Statistics About HIV / AIDS
HIV /AIDS & The World
According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, as of the end of 2004, the following trends of the worldwide epidemic (or pandemic) of HIV are evident:
- Today, 39 million people are thought to have HIV/AIDS. Of these, 37.2 million are adults. 17.6 million are women, and 2.2 million are children under 15.
- An estimated 5 million people became infected with HIV in 2004, including 2 million women and 640,000 children under 15.
- During 2004, AIDS caused the deaths of about 3.1 million people, including 1.2 million women and 510,000 children under 15.
- Women are more and more affected by HIV. Approximately, 45%, or 17.8 million, of the 37.2 million adults living with HIV or AIDS worldwide are women and 50% of these cases are of heterosexual preferences.
HIV / AIDS & The U.S.
According to the Centers for Disease Control:
- There are about 1 million people infected with HIV in the U.S.
- About 250,000 (25%) became infected with HIV when they were teenagers
- In 2003 there were around 3172 people living with AIDS in the U.S.
- 5% of these people are between 13 and 24 years old
- About 205,000 are infected with HIV and do not know it.
- 18,017 people died of AIDS in 2003
- Of all the teenagers in the U.S., less than half are African American or Hispanic; yet, 70% of the cases of AIDS among teens are African American or Hispanics.

It is important to remember that these are only the reported numbers. The actual number of cases of HIV/AIDS is bigger since there are a lot of people who do not get tested.
HIV/AIDS & Texas
According to the Texas Department of Health:
- Since 1999 there have been about 19,000 cases of HIV and 64,000 cases of AIDS reported in Texas
- As of 2003, there are about 48,000 persons living with HIV/AIDS
- In 2003 only, there were 4802 cases of HIV reported in Texas.
- Of these, 3029 (63%) were African Americans or Hispanics ages 15-24.
- Within African Americans and Hispanics, 974 (32%) were female and 2055 (68%) were males
