Human Papillomavirus (HPV) / Genital Warts
Danger
- Can lead to cervical cancer in women
- Newborns exposed to HPV can develop warts in their voice box (Part in our throat that we use to talk)
- Increases chances of getting HIV
How common is it?
- 50-75% of sexually active men and women have it
- 20 million people have HPV
Symptoms
- Red, pink, or grey warts on genitals
- May be small bumps or cauliflower shaped
- Many people have no symptoms
Transmission
- Skin-to-skin contact (oral, anal, or vaginal sex)
- Can be spread when warts are not visible
- Condoms may not protect
- Mothers can pass HPV to their children during child birth
Treatment
- No cure
- Warts can be removed with medication, freezing, laser therapy, or surgical removal
