Human Papillomavirus (HPV) / Genital Warts

Danger

  • Can lead to cervical cancer in women
  • Newborns exposed to HPV can develop warts in their voice box (Part in our throat that we use to talk)
  • Increases chances of getting HIV

How common is it?

  • 50-75% of sexually active men and women have it
  • 20 million people have HPV

Symptoms

  • Red, pink, or grey warts on genitals
  • May be small bumps or cauliflower shaped
  • Many people have no symptoms

Transmission

  • Skin-to-skin contact (oral, anal, or vaginal sex)
  • Can be spread when warts are not visible
  • Condoms may not protect
  • Mothers can pass HPV to their children during child birth

Treatment

  • No cure
  • Warts can be removed with medication, freezing, laser therapy, or surgical removal
