Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Type II
Danger
- Increases chances of getting HIV
How common is it?
- 45 million people have HSV-2
- 1 in 5 people are infected with HSV-2
Symptoms
- Painful blisters or sores that heal in 2-4 weeks
- May have second crop of sores and flu-like symptoms
Transmission
- Skin-to-skin contact with infected area
- Can transfer it to the mouth, genitals, or eyes
- Asymptomatic shedding
- Condoms may not provide protection
- Can be passed from mother to child during childbirth
Treatment
- No cure
- Medications relieve pain and shorten outbreak
