Danger

  • Increases chances of getting HIV

How common is it?

  • 45 million people have HSV-2
  • 1 in 5 people are infected with HSV-2

Symptoms

  • Painful blisters or sores that heal in 2-4 weeks
  • May have second crop of sores and flu-like symptoms

Transmission

  • Skin-to-skin contact with infected area
  • Can transfer it to the mouth, genitals, or eyes
  • Asymptomatic shedding
  • Condoms may not provide protection
  • Can be passed from mother to child during childbirth

Treatment

  • No cure
  • Medications relieve pain and shorten outbreak
