Scabies (Mites)

Symptoms

  • Small, raised, red bumps or blisters on the skin
  • Severe itching
  • Men: webs of the fingers, wrists, elbows, underarms, belt line, thighs, and genitalia
  • Women: nipples, abdomen, and the buttock

Transmission

  • Skin-to-skin contact with infected area
  • Infested sheets, towels, and clothing

Treatment

  • Cured with creams, lotions or shampoos
  • Most can be bought at a drugstore
  • Some require a prescription
  • Bedding, clothing, and towels should be washed in hot water
  • Combs and brushes should be soaked in hot water
