Syphilis
Danger
- Increases chances of getting HIV
- Death and serious harm to unborn baby if mother becomes infected
Symptoms
- 4 Stages: Primary, Secondary, Latent, and Late
- Primary Stage: Swollen glands and painless sore that will last 3-6 weeks and heal on its own
- Secondary Stage: Rash, fever, swollen lymph glands, sore throat, patchy hair loss, headaches, weight loss, muscle aches, and tiredness, symptoms will go away on their own
- Latent Syphilis: Damage to brain, nerves, eyes, heart, blood vessels, liver, bones, and joints (stage may last 5-20 years with no symptoms)
- Late syphilis: Inability to coordinate muscle movements, paralysis, numbness, gradual blindness and dementia (may result in death)
Transmission
- Skin-to-skin contact with sores (vaginal, oral, or anal sex)
- Sores can be on lips or mouth and be passed through kissing
