Priority Levels
The government only puts aside a specific amount of money a year for WIC. That means that not everyone who is eligible receives WIC, only the number that the government separated money for. A "priority" system has been established to give help to those who need it the most.
- pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and infants determined to be at nutritional risk because of a nutrition-related medical condition
- infants up to 6 months of age whose mothers participated in WIC or could have participated and had a serious medical problem
- children at nutritional risk because of a nutrition-related medical problem
- pregnant or breastfeeding women and infants at nutritional risk because of an inadequate dietary pattern
- children at nutritional risk because of an inadequate dietary pattern
- non-breastfeeding, postpartum (after birth) women with any nutritional risk
- Individuals at nutritional risk only because they are homeless or migrants, and current participants who, without WIC foods, could continue to have medical and/or dietary problems
Who provides WIC?
- Hospital, county health departments and mobile clinics
- Schools
- Public housing sites
- Migrant health centers and camps
- Indian Health Services facilities
